SASMO: Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad
The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) is one of the largest and most prestigious mathematics competitions in Asia, attracting over 35,000 participants from 38 countries in recent years. Established in 2006, SASMO aims to discover, encourage, and challenge mathematically gifted students from Singapore and other Asian countries.
Overview of SASMO
SASMO is organized by the Singapore International Math Contests Centre (SIMCC) and supported by non-profit foundations such as the Scholastic Trust Singapore (STS) and the SASMO Advisory Council (SAC). The competition is designed to stretch the untapped thinking potential of students, enhancing their performance in school mathematics and developing higher-order thinking skills (HOTS).

Eligibility and Registration
SASMO is open to students from Primary 1 to Junior College 2 (equivalent to grades 1 to 12). Registration typically opens a few months before the competition and involves a fee. Schools can register in bulk, while individual registrations are also available for students who wish to participate independently.
Competition Format
The SASMO competition consists of two sections:
- Section A: 15 multiple-choice questions, with 2 points for each correct answer, -1 point for each incorrect answer, and 0 points for unanswered questions.
- Section B: 10 non-routine questions, with 4 points for each correct answer and no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions.
Awards and Recognition
Top performers in SASMO receive prestigious awards:
- Perfect Score Award: A cash prize of $100 for each perfect scorer, up to a maximum of $5,000.
- Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards: The top 8% receive Gold, the next 12% receive Silver, and the subsequent 20% receive Bronze. All participants receive a certificate.
